The Champion was introduced in 1902, when Westclox was still the "Western Clock Company", and was offered with or without an alarm. This is the time-only version. The case is more tasteful and understated than others of the time, with a primarily floral design of twining vines and leaves. I think it is meant to be a laurel wreath, for a "champion". It is somewhat of a crossover between ornate Victorian and the floral emphasis and lines of Art Nouveau.
The original gilt finish was almost entirely gone. It has been refinished with Rub n Buff in the Gold Leaf color, made of metallic powder in a carnauba wax base buffed to seal and shine. The last photo shows condition before refinishing. It has the original green paint around the dial, in very good condition. The paper over metal dial is also in good condition, with gold filigree and the numbers in the chapter ring alternating between gold fill and plain fill. The gold fill is somewhat faded. The numbers are dark blue. The blued steel hands are in good shape. The original wavy glass lens is fine, clear and clean.
The movement is classic Westclox, brass with a production date stamp of "2 13 4" for February 13, 1904. This was only two years after the 1902 patent of the Westclox molded pinion gears that they would use for nearly another century.
This clock is well over 100 years old. The movement has been disassembled and cleaned and is running happily, but it is temperamental. It is a friction fit into the "can" of the case, so when you wind it the whole movement might turn a little inside the can unless you hold it in place - but it can be turned right back to where it should be. The fit in the can is not perfect; in some positions the balance wheel will rub the case and stop. If you want to wind and use this daily it will take a little patience. The movement is all original but it was serviced back in the day by a clockmaker with the initials "TH", marked on the back plate as was the practice at the time (and since removed by cleaning). "TH" modified the barrel catch for the mainspring, which doesn't affect the operation. Other than that it has only been cleaned and oiled. This an attractive, functioning, true antique.
This clock is about 9" tall.
