This early electric wood cased clock came from a local Craftsman home and fits that decor very well. It has a manual start Sangamo motor which dates from the purchase of the Sangamo company by General Time, the parent company of Westclox and Seth Thomas. That occurred at the end of 1931 and this clock probably dates from 1932, using the existing stock of motors from the Hammond Sangamo Synchronous clocks, which used exactly the same motor and movement. Hammond continued to produce their own line of clocks.
The wood case is possibly Maple and is in good condition, with light marks and some persistent glue from a sticker. The case opens and swings out for access to the clock setting and starting mechanism. The glass is clean and clear with no noticeable flaws. The painted dial has pale green numerals and chapter ring. The base paint shows some marks and one small area of paint loss. The hands are in good age appropriate condition. The original instruction label is still on the back. This heavy clock needs to hand securely on the wall; use an anchored heavy hook for the attached sawtooth picture hanger. It originally had wood extenders to attach directly to the stud in a plaster and lathe wall.
The movement keeps time quietly with faint occasional rotor noise and smooth operation of the sweep second hand. The manual start takes some practice and patience to master and may take several spin attempts to start the rotor. There are two photos of the motor; the first shows the starting position of the start lever and the second shows the end position. The video shows the spin start in action. I am putting a new modern cord on the clock for safety's sake, but will include the original long brown cord and plug if you want to go true vintage. It is in good condition but has some paint spots on it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Old electrics are inherently dangerous for daily use, even when refurbished and brought up to original condition. They don't meet modern code. Use cautiously with knowledge of the risk.
This clock is about 10" square and 4" deep..
