This is the original pre-war Belfast, introduced in 1939 and designed by Max Schlenker. It has a manual start S2 electric motor, operated by pushing down and releasing the lever on the side. The video shows the manual start. This is with an already warm motor, a cold motor may take a few spins to start. The movement plate is stamped with "5 40" for a production date of May, 1940. These were replaced by a completely different self-starting "Belfast" in 1948. The stamped steel case came in Ivory, Red or Green. This one has the original Ivory paint.
Condition: The ribbed chapter ring has Art Deco numerals which still have all their black paint. The painted metal dial is very good, clean, with one small noticeable scratch. The glass is clear with only a few very tiny marks. The original ivory paint is mostly intact and glossy with some marks and scrapes.
The movement has been cleaned, the pivots lightly oiled, and lithium grease lightly applied to the fiber wheel. The motor operates quietly with smooth operation of the sweep second hand. The vintage white cord is attached to the motor leads with caps for easy cord replacement if desired. The clock is clean inside and out.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Old electrics are inherently dangerous for daily use, even when refurbished and brought up to original condition. They don't meet modern code. Use cautiously with knowledge of the risk.
This clock is about 6-3/4" square.
